Heady, intoxicating, addictive, Oud is a very popular material in perfumery<\/strong>. And if it has been on the rise in recent years in the Old Continent, it is because no one can be indifferent to its warm and sweet notes. Never has the Oud been so attractive as since niche perfumery<\/strong> put it on a pedestal, this setting it up in the place of an olfactory must have. The biggest perfume houses have integrated this fragrant wood into their bottles. The Oud<\/strong> comes from a tree found mainly in the tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia. It has been used for millennia in fumigation, especially in the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding countries. There are two varieties of plants that make Oud wood: Aquilaria and Gyronops<\/strong>. Also known as Agarwood, Eagle, Aloe or Calanguar, it is one of the most expensive raw materials in the world. In fact, a high quality Oud wood is close to 100,000 euros per kg.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Not all Aquilaria are of interest to Agarwood enthusiasts<\/strong>. Only trees infected with odorous oleoresin<\/strong> are desirable. Indeed, Oud wood is produced following an insect invasion, shock or fungal infection. Often, it was the ants that carved out the trunk of the tree. They will participate in the proliferation of bacteria by introducing in particular fungal spores. In response to this intrusion, the plant will defend itself by producing antibodies in the form of a dark, viscous oleoresin. It is this fragrant gum that we call Oud or Agar that gives the wood the warm, leathery and animal notes<\/strong> that we know. The wood of Oud is harvested in the form of shavings which are burned with other resins. It will also be transformed into essential oil to be used in perfumery.<\/p>

It takes several years for the tree to produce a quality Oud<\/strong>. Expensive, Agarwood<\/strong> is an object of greed, leading some people to overuse it. And while the invasion process is a natural one, it is often accelerated by humans. It is therefore not uncommon to see tree trunks injured by nails to promote their infestation. And since it is very difficult to know whether the tree produces Oud or not, many trees are cut down unreasonably. Most of the time, it turns out that the selected plants do not contain Oud.
